Song of the Day: August 12, 2024

It’s been a while since I’ve selected a piece of music from the realm of difficult listening, so I’m starting the work week off with a tune from the debut album by moiii. Formed in 2018 by Scott Shellhamer from Chicago and Jason Butler from Austin, this duo plays in a sandbox filled with avant-garde, experimental, industrial, noise, drone, post-rock, and metal grains of sand. Each track on their 6-song self-titled release presents a variety of tones, dynamic intensity, and sonic layers. I hear nods to Throbbing Gristle, The Swans, Einstürzende Neubauten, Big Black, Cabaret Voltaire, Nurse With Wound, Tortoise, and Locrian (just to name a few). This may not be the most pleasant experience for those uninitiated in the world of experimental music, but all music deserves its place in the vast sonic landscape of 21st century composition.

  1. Not difficult to listen to, at all. I’m a fan of Underworld and trance/house/industrial music. It helps me to clear my mind when things become overwhelming. This ticks all the boxes. Thank you for the heads up!
