Song of the Day: September 28, 2024

Saturday is lost classics day. Continuing my focus on artists who died in 2024, today I present a song by World Party. Karl Wallinger died on March 10, 2024. He was a member of two great ’80s bands – The Waterboys and World Party. His years with The Waterboys during the early-mid ’80s resulted in some of their most beloved material, but I’ve selected a song by World Party that holds a special memory for me. Their 1986 debut album Private Revolution was one of the first Christmas gifts I ever bought for Ms. Faux – a CD reissue to replace her lost vinyl copy that she loved as a teenager. The album is a wonderful mix of rock, pop, funk, and folk with almost all instruments played by Wallinger. Except for the modest hit “Ship of Fools,” the album was ignored by almost everyone. The next few albums by the band were bigger hits internationally, but were totally ignored in the US. It is a shame that this band didn’t have a bigger impact because when I listen to their debut album I hear an artist on par with INXS during that same period.

  1. I love this song, period. It’s a sublime mix of melody and vocals. One of my favorites to sing along to in the privacy of my car so that my Edith Bunker-like voice doesn’t offend anyone’s ears. 🙂

And, I learned something new–the Waterboys connection. Now I know why I love that criminally underrated band, as well. Thank you!

  2. I knew of The Waterboys, but I had not heard of World Party. First time hearing it, I love the arrangement of Ship of Fools, and the vocal really hits you. Will have to look to get a few of their albums myself. Thanks for sharing. 😊
