Song of the Day: January 8, 2025

Continuing my Best of 2024 list, today’s selection is “The New Sound” by Geordie Greep. Anyone who listens to progressive rock knows that the band Black Midi have been the best prog band for the last few years, releasing three amazing albums between June 2019 and July 2022. The group is now on temporary hiatus while their members focus on solo projects, and Greep’s 2024 release The New Sound was released in October 2024. There are a few similarities between this release and previous Black Midi albums, but this is clearly a Geordie Greep solo project. Drawing on Greep’s love of old music ranging from the tango nuevo of Astor Piazzola to Latin jazz to the Frank Sinatra songbook to many points in between, this is an exciting collection of songs that is unique in the world of modern rock. That is not to say that the music sounds old – this is modern and progressive – but the influences are clearly present. The music of Geordie Greep and Black Midi is not for everyone, but if you are adventurous enough to dive in then the rewards are plentiful.

  1. Well THAT’S pretty wild, and cool. I was born in 1961, so my idea of prog has mostly been bands like King Crimson, etc. And my son was obsessed with Dream Theater for a long time. But this is quite different! I like the jazz elements.
