Hamid Al Shaeri: Yekfini Nesma’ Sotak
I just wrapped up my Best of 2024 posts, and I’m ready to dive back into some music of the past. Since it is Funky Friday, here is a tune by Hamid Al Shaeri. Hamid Al Shaeri is influential in the Arabic pop of the late 70s/early 80s that combined Arabic and western music into a new style called Al Jeel. This tune is from around 1983, but is clearly influenced by the late 70s disco-funk of groups like Chic. Thanks to the incredible German reissue label Habibi Funk for making gems like this available to all.

This music has an interesting twist of cultures.

Yes! I love this Arab funk stuff and how it pulls together all those instruments and sounds.

It sounds like Maroon 5 this intro.

That is not a band I know very well but I love this comparison. Connecting vintage Arab Funk with Maroon 5 makes me smile wide!
