Joni Mitchell: Harry’s House/Centerpiece

Continuing my focus on the music of 1975, today’s song is from album # 7 on my list of the year’s Top 20 releases. The Hissing of Summer Lawns by Joni Mitchell was her follow-up to Court and Spark, and it is pushes her sound even further away from the singer/songwriter material of her earlier albums. Personally speaking, I have always thought Mitchell’s albums from this period (Court and Spark, Hissing of Summer Lawns, Hejira, Don Juan’s Reckless Daughter) to be her best. This 1975 album was her last to hit the Top 10, but its fusion of avant-pop, experimental, jazz, and electronic music was to become her sound for the rest of the decade. 50 years later, it often finds its way onto Top 500 of all time lists. Especially noteworthy is the tune “The Jungle Line,” one of the first uses of sampling in popular music. I know everyone now-a-days loves to name-check Blue as her best album, but I usually listen to Summer Lawns when I need a dose of Mitchell’s artistry.

  1. Giggling a lot at Laura’s comment. But also, man I love her so much. Yes, the music, but also just her. Thank you for the unexpected correction of the track I was on today. ❤ ❤ ❤
