Jim Guthrie: “So Small”

Saturday is lost classics day. I often focus on albums much older than this one, but I recently felt like listening to it and thought I should share. Jim Guthrie is a Canadian songwriter who has slowly built a career over the last 30 years. He has worked in multiple musical media, including indie rock, television, video games, and films. His 2003 album Now, More Than Ever is one of my favorite albums of that year. It was ignored by most outside of Canada and college radio stations at the time, but it now stands as one of his most popular releases. These are all great songs and the production is wonderful as it incorporates strings and horns into Guthrie’s always engaging melodies and lyrics. The next time you need something to listen as you drive home late at night, throw this album into the mix. It will not disappoint.

  1. It’s funny how we tend to think that the only way a musician can make money is through recording (not so much these days) and touring. When you start researching, you find out how many things a lot of them have done outside of the “typical” musical routes.
    Great share. Thank you!

  2. I’ve spent the better part of the past 20 years researching and “discovering” criminally underrated Canadian music. This has somehow slipped my radar. Thank you for the intro. It’s disgusting how many brilliant artists that we, in the states, have missed out on for various, stupid reasons that seem to make sense only to corporate suits. In the meantime, I have made some great friends with underrated Canadian musicians that are precious to me. Check out Rob Stuart/E.D.F./SLAVE to the SQUAREwave, Benjamin Russell, George Rondina/Imagination Machine, Bernard Frazer, and Vladimyr Rogov/Arkitex for starters. Thanks again for yet another great Canadian musician to add to my playlist.
