When I started the original Radio Faux Show, one of my favorite themes was to take a trip around the world and learn about music that I do not know. I’ll come back to my normal posts in a few weeks, such as 3 Song Dance Party, Lyrical Tuesday, and Funky Friday, but for now let’s continue our journey across the globe.
Mercedes Sosa was a Chilean vocalist who was influential in the movement known as Nueva Canción. This is a form of modernized Chilean folk music developed in the 1960s that presents political and social themes within a traditional Chilean folk structure. “Gracias a la Vida” is a gorgeous ballad from her 1971 album Homenaje a Violeta Parra. This album is one of the most important Latin Music albums of the 20th century and presents covers of songs originally performed by Nueva Canción pioneer Violeta Parra.
