Song of the Day: December 31, 2024

The album Brat by Charli XCX may be my favorite album of 2024. It is definitely my record of choice for driving. Charli XCX is Exhibit # 1 for how my tastes in music have changed while writing this blog for the last 4 years. In my quest to find new music during this time, I continually found myself listening to two kinds of music – misogynistic/hyper-sexualized hip hop that you can’t dance to and pop music that follows the formula developed by Taylor Swift and Ed Sheeran. In both cases, I have done my best to enjoy the music, but have finally given up. I am now much more open to modern music than I have been throughout most of my adult life, but I still can’t find any enjoyment in listening to Kendrick Lamar, Taylor Swift, Ice Spice, or dozens of other similar artists who control the pop charts. On the other hand, there are major pop artists I have discovered, such as Charli XCX, that I ignored before researching this blog but now listen to regularly. I find the music of Charli XCX to be as interesting, groundbreaking, and enjoyable as the music of Madonna in the ’80s. If I have to define myself in terms of modern pop music (which I don’t, and no one should), then I would have to say that the music of Charli XCX is my jam. It is New Year’s Eve, so I selected the song “Club Classics” in case you want to dance (even if you just do it in your head or by yourself).

  1. How do you feel about Chappel Roan? Yes, quite overtly sexual in her lyrics, but I think she was my artist of the year, whereas last year’s were Jungle and Stephen Sanchez. I haven’t gotten into Charli XCX yet, though her name has been everywhere. Fun tune.
